It’s not every day that we can take the entire day to reflect on how fortunate we all are to have the brave men and women in uniform who serve our country every day without failure or excuse. They show up daily, not because they have to or for their career or the payment.

They show up because they made a promise under oath that they would serve and protect their country for the fulfillment of their time in service. When we think back on these individuals, we need to take a moment to honor them.

Serve Them Lunch

Typically, you hear about all of the breakfast, dinner, and lunch specials during Veteran’s Day. But you have to ask yourself, wouldn’t it be that much more meaningful if you were the one to feed a veteran? Well, you can, and this is a perfect opportunity to meet someone new in your community and potentially make more than just an acquaintance, but a friend and an ally.

Make Them Known

Sometimes we have to push the envelope a little. If you’re hosting an event or you want to treat your local vets, get as much information about them as they are willing to give. During the lunch or dinner you’re hosting, it would be a sincere gesture to share with the group that you’re hosting a little bit about each veteran, their hobbies, family life, interests, skills, and what they did after the military.

This moment to bond will help everyone connect a little closer. It will also allow bonding among the group, encouraging them to mingle and make new comrades from different military backgrounds and services.

Share Their Experiences

The bread and butter of Veteran’s Day are the sacrifices they made for us all. Make sure you’re reserving a little time for the veterans to talk a little about their experiences and what they faced, how they survived, and what it all meant to them then and now.

Service Returned

You could even take the celebrations to the veteran’s home and host a dinner party for their family. This way, you can make it a much more personal experience. Additionally, you get the opportunity to know the veteran on a level that you might not have had at a luncheon or any other kind of event that you’ll host.

Sometimes, just opening yourself up and listening to their story is more than enough for a person. You don’t know what struggles they have gone through or those that they may still be battling.

War has a way of tangling even the most upright people in its grip, only to hold their hearts and minds hostage long after the fight. Some are still in the fight and don’t realize it.

Others are haunted daily by what they experienced and may not have the necessary outlets to talk about it or relate to others. So being there and showing interest could mean more to them than you could ever know.

Community Service

Your efforts are always welcome at the local homeless shelters, where you will find many veterans with nowhere to go. The least you could do is feed them and help to clothe them. You might even include some military graphic tees on Veteran’s Day to be cheerful and celebrate all they have done for us.

Spending some time working for these services helps give them a better opportunity for a brighter tomorrow if they will accept the help. All you can do is try and hope they accept.

Many veterans are permanently disabled, and more are under the VA’s care for the rest of their lives due to the battle scars and havoc that the war took on their bodies. The ultimate way to pay your respect and give back to the veterans is by visiting the VA on Veteran’s Day to spend time with them.

Some men and women can’t live their lives the way they used to due to their conditions. So seeing someone come into the VA for a visit is a real treat to them. Make sure you show them plenty of love and support because they sacrificed their lives so that we could live freely.

There are so many organizations that donate to the veterans’ funding. This includes veterans transitioning out of military service facing hard times, those going through financial hardships, those with mental illness, and those who need assistance in any form.

Veterans have a different life experience than most once they leave the service because they have to leave everything that they knew as their life behind them to start over. Unfortunately, many people can struggle with this.
